Barnett and Bultemeyer to Compete at NCAA Division III Outdoor Meet

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Senior Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Ross) and sophomore Evie Bultemeyer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) will represent Trine University at the 2019 NCAA Division III National Outdoor Meet hosted by the University of Mount Union at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

The duo returns to the national stage after competing in the NCAA national indoor meet this past season in early March.

Barnett qualified in the field of 20 athletes in the long jump.  He will be seeded seventh in the event at nationals and currently ranks ninth in Division III with a season-best leap of 24' 0.25" which he recorded at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Outdoor Championships to win the event and become a three-time conference outdoor champion.  His mark was a MIAA Outdoor Championship record and surpassed Josh Meckes of Calvin who had a leap of 23' 9.50" back in 2006.  Not only was his mark a conference record, but also a Trine record which Barnett currently owned at 23' 10.00" which he set in May of 2017.  This will be Barnett's first appearance in the outdoor nationals, he was a three-time national qualifier in the long jump during the indoor season and finished as the national runner-up the last two years (2018 and 2019).

Bultemeyer will compete in a pair of events in the 800-meter and 1500-meter runs.  She will be seeded third in the 800m with a season-best time of 2:10.23 which she set in the first outdoor meet of the season at the Emory (Ga.) University Invitational in March.  In the 1500m, Bultemeyer will be seeded fifth thanks to a best mark of 4:29.18 which came at the "GINA" Relays hosted by Hillsdale (Mich.) College.   Bultemeyer was a two-event individual champion at the MIAA Outdoor Championship where she claimed the 400-meter and 1500-meter events.  In addition, Bultemeyer finished as a runner-up in the 800-meter run by less than a second behind the event winner with a mark of 2:18.06.  Her time in the 1500m fell just two one-hundreths of a second shy of the MIAA record with a time of 4:35.50 to become a first-time outdoor champion in the event.  She went on to be named the MIAA Outdoor Track "MVP" to sweep both most valuable player awards during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

At the indoor national meet this past season, Bultemeyer earned All-American status by finishing fourth in the mile run (4:53.48).

The three-day NCAA outdoor meet is set to begin on Thursday, Mar. 23 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.  The first events on Thursday are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
