Three Student-Athletes Earn MIAA Weekly Honors

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Three Trine University student-athletes have earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association weekly honors by being named "Players of the Week."

Senior Marcus Winters (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) was tabbed the Men's Basketball "Player of the Week."  Sophomore Chloe Brittain (Breckenridge, Mich./Breckenridge) is this week's women's track "Runner of the Week" and junior Derek Miller (Shipshewana, Ind./Westview) was selected as the men's track "Runner of the Week."

Winters helped the men's basketball team finish with a pair of victories during the past week with wins against Kalamazoo (Mich.) College and Alma (Mich.) College to start MIAA play.  He averaged a team-high 19.0 points per game while shooting 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the field, including 45.5 percent (five-of-11) from three-point range.  Winters tallied a career-high 23 points in the victory againt Kalamazoo and then added a 15-point effort against the Scots in addition to having nine rebounds and seven assists.  He finished the week with a 6.5 rpg average with 11 total assists and three steals.

Brittain aided the Thunder women's track & field team to a victory at the Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open hosted by Trine to resume the 2019-20 season.  Individually, Brittain finished as the runner-up in the mile run by crossing the finish line in a time of 5:25.25.  Her time put her in the top-50 in NCAA Division III in the event with the 43rd best mark so far this year and first among MIAA competitors.

Miller and the Trine men's track & field team edged out Grace College for the team championship by a point at this past weekend's Sean Brady/Keith Turner Alumni Open.  Miller helped the cause by winning the 3000-meter run and was one of three Trine runners to finish in the top five.  Miller posted a mark of 8:48.80 to take top honors.  His time currently ranks first in the MIAA and puts him 18th nationally among Div. III athletes.  

The men's basketball team will travel to Adrian, Mich. for the MIAA matchup against Adrian College on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m.  The men's and women's track & field teams will host the annual Don & Riley Zimmer Classic next Saturday (Jan. 18) at the Keith E. Busse/Steel Dynamics Athletic and Recreation Center.  The first events are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
