Ten Trine Teams earn MIAA Team Academic Awards

FREELAND, Mich.-- Ten Trine University athletic teams were named recipients of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Team Academic Awards for the 2014-15 school year, the conference announced Wednesday.

The Thunder volleyball, men's tennis, men's golf, women's basketball, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis, women's track and field, and men's cross country teams earned the distinction. Trine boasted the third-most team academic awards among all institutions in the conference. Teams must have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 during the 2014-15 school year to be eligible for a team academic award.

Leading Trine in academic performance was the Thunder volleyball team with a 3.638 GPA. The team earned the best GPA among all volleyball teams in the conference and the fifth best GPA among all MIAA teams regardless of sport. The volleyball team previously received a national team academic award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The men's tennis team earned a 3.503 GPA, the best among all men's teams at Trine and the top mark among all MIAA men's tennis teams. The squad’s academic performance was the third best by a men's team in any sport in the whole conference.

The recognition adds another honor to the academic performances of the men's golf, men's and women's cross country, and men's basketball teams. Each of these teams previously earned national team academic awards from their respective coaches associations.
