Raftery, 1989 Volleyball Team to be Honored

Raftery, 1989 Volleyball Team to be Honored

ANGOLA, Ind.-- Trine University has announced its 2015 Athletic Hall of Fame class, set to be inducted this Saturday.

Dual-sport standout Sallie Raftery (Richardson) and the 1989 women's volleyball team are this year's inductees. The honorees will be formally inducted into the Hall of Fame at the University's Touchstone dinner Friday evening, and will be introduced on-field at Saturday's football game against Olivet.

Sallie Raftery (Richardson)

Raftery was an all-conference performer in both volleyball and softball during her time at Trine. Her name can be found all over both team's record books.

As a member of the Thunder volleyball team, Richardson earned All-MIAA First Team honors in 2008 and second-team honors in 2007. At the time of the end of her playing career, she was the school's all-time leader with kills. Her mark of 1,395 kills still ranks second all-time in team history. She is one of just two players in school history with over 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs.

Raftery earned all-conference honors on the softball diamond three times, including two All-MIAA First Team honors. She ranks fourth in team history in hits, fifth in batting average, sixth in runs scored and seventh in stolen bases. Her 179 career hits were a school-record at the time of her graduation. She was a part of three teams that won MIAA titles. She won the 2009 MIAA batting title and earned NFCA All-Region honors that year.

Raftery graduated from Trine with a degree in Math Education in 2009.

1989 Women's Volleyball Team

The second honoree is the members of the 1989 women's volleyball team, which advanced to the NAIA National Tournament.

Under the guidance of head coach Dave Saenz, Tri-State finished the season with a 28-6 overall record. The team still holds the school record for the best winning percentage in a season in school history. The 28 wins are the second most in a season in team history.

The 1989 team became the only volleyball team in school history to reach the NAIA National Tournament. The team defeated Georgetown (Ky.) to win the NAIA Bi-District 10 championship to advance to the national stage. The team traveled to Laie, Hawaii where they were able to earn a victory over Eastern Nazarene for their final victory of the season.

Coaching staff and support personnel honored include:

Head Coach: Dave Saenz
Assistant Coach: Sue Boissenet
Manager: Amy Brugh
Athletic Trainer: Bubba Meaux

Team members include:

Trine University’s 21 intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports continue to build upon our past and the success in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  Although the emphasis is on team accomplishments, individual performances have risen to a level that must be recognized.

The Trine Hall of Fame honors the best of the best Thunder athletes, coaches, and administrators.
