Raftery, 1989 Volleyball Team enter Athletic Hall of Fame

Raftery, 1989 Volleyball Team enter Athletic Hall of Fame

ANGOLA, Ind.-- Trine University inducted its 2015 Athletic Hall of Fame class as part of the University's Homecoming celebration last weekend.

Dual-sport standout Sallie Raftery (Richardson) and the 1989 women's volleyball team were this year's inductees. The honorees were formally inducted into the Hall of Fame at the University's Touchstone dinner Friday evening. The inductees were introduced and publicly recognized at Saturday's football game.

1989 Women's Volleyball Team

The 1989 women's volleyball team was the only volleyball team in school history to advance to the NAIA National Tournament.

Under the guidance of head coach Dave Saenz, Tri-State finished the season with a 28-6 overall record. The win total is the second-most in a season in team history and stands as the best winning-percentage in team history.

The team defeated Georgetown (Ky.) to win the NAIA Bi-District 10 Championship to reach the national stage. The team earned a trip to Laie, Hawaii where they competed against the best teams in the nation, earning a victory over Eastern Nazarene for their final victory of the season.

Coaching staff and support personnel honored include:

Head Coach: Dave Saenz
Assistant Coach: Sue Boissenet
Manager: Amy Brugh
Athletic Trainer: Bubba Meaux

Team members include:

Terry Sudek
Angela Lattimer (Petroskey)
Caryn McCoy (Ward)
Kerri Kugler (Covell)
Lisa Dumm (Taylor)
Karen Oberly
Carol Lee
Julia Callaghan (Wise)
Andrea Schermerhorn (Becker)
Jennifer Knowles (Price)
Christi Saenz (Thorrez)
Jill Bakle

Sallie Raftery (Richardson)

Raftery was an all-conference performer in both volleyball and softball during her time at Trine. Her name can be found all over both team's record books.

Raftery was a two-time all-conference performer on the volleyball court. At the time of the end of her playing career, she was the school's all-time leader in kills. Her mark of 1,395 kills still ranks second in school history. She holds the school's single-season record in kills and is one of two players in school history with over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs.

Raftery was a three-time all-conference performer on the softball diamond, including two All-MIAA First Team honors. She won the 2009 MIAA batting title and earned NFCA All-Region honors that year. Her 179 career hits were a team record at the end of her playing career.

Raftery graduated from Trine with a degree in Math Education in 2009.

Trine University’s 21 intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports continue to build upon our past and the success in NAIA and the NCAA.  Although the emphasis is on team accomplishments, individual performances have risen to a level that must be recognized.

The Trine Hall of Fame honors the best of the best Thunder athletes, coaches, and administrators.
