Hoopla Community Day Set for February 20

ANGOLA, Ind. – Trine University welcomes the community to attend its annual Hoopla Community Day on Saturday, Feb. 20 in Hershey Hall on the university's main campus.

Community Day events will center on a basketball doubleheader in Hershey Hall, 1101 Thunder Drive, featuring the Thunder men’s and women’s basketball teams. The Trine women will host Alma at 1 p.m., followed by a men’s contest between the Thunder and Albion at 3 p.m. Admission to both games is free for all fans. Free T-shirts will be available to the first 300 adults and 200 youths in attendance, with special events and giveaways continuing throughout both games.

Halftime entertainment will include a game of musical chairs to vie for prizes, as well as an inflatable body suit obstacle course. The High Voltage dancers will also perform with youth camp performers as part of Little Bolts Cheer camp. The team will also perform its CANAM Nationals routine.

Between games, free hot dogs will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis for 200 guests.

Following the doubleheader, fans will have the chance to participate in a half-court shootout for a VISA gift card. The first fan to sink a half-court shot will win $300.

Fans will have the opportunity to see Trine basketball teams that are enjoying successful seasons The Thunder men own a 13-5 overall record and earlier this season achieved its first Top 25 ranking as a member of NCAA Division III. The women’s team holds an 11-7 mark and boasts a victory over one Top 25 foe this year.

Both games could prove important in the race for playoff seeding in the MIAA Tournament. Each team is in the thick of battles for the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in the conference postseason tournament.

Each team will honors its senior class prior to the games. Alivia Recker (Arlington, Ohio/Arlington), Whitney Shaffer (Tipton, Ind./Tri-Central) and Taylor Cole (Mount Pleasant, Mich./Shepherd)  will be honored by the women's team. The senior class of the men's team is made up of Ben Syroka (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer), Sloan Whitaker (Van Wert, Ohio/Lincolnview), Tarvis Malone (Toledo, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit), Braden Knight (Bedford, Ind./North Lawrence) and Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City).

Community Day also includes a Hoops and Wings alumni event. Alumni will have the opportunity to gather in the west gym of Hershey Hall for hot wings provided by Buffalo Wild Wings; other refreshments will also be available. Alumni may RSVP to the event by visiting trine.edu/events.
