STAKELY NAMED NCBWA NATIONAL PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Lefty Also Named to D3Baseball.com Team of the Week

DALLAS - A solid week against nationally-ranked opponents by Jonathan Mason of Bridgewater College and the first no-hitter in conference play in Trine University history for Phil Stakely have earned them the fifth NCAA Division III National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively for March 25-31, 2013, as voted on by a panel of D-III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Stakely, a senior southpaw from Ostrander, Ohio, earned Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Week honors when he became the first Trine pitcher to throw a no-hitter in a conference game as the Thunder shut out Albion 10-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Mar. 30.  He faced only 22 batters, one above the minimum, in the seven-inning contest, striking out three, walking one and hitting one in pitching the 27th MIAA no-hitter since 1958, and the first complete game no-no since 2009.  Of his 74 pitches, 51 were strikes.  It was Stakely’s first time to receive MIAA weekly honors.

Stakely was also named to the D3Baseball.com team of the week and was one of three starters to be selected. The full list can be found here.

Stakely becomes the first player from the MIAA to earn the national award this season and becomes the first Trine player to be named the National Player of the Week.
