Thunder Fall Short Against Hope

ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine baseball team came up on the short end of a pair of pitcher's duels as the Thunder were swpet by Hope in MIAA-action Monday afternoon at Jannen Field.

A three-run sixth paced Hope to a 4-2 win in the first game, and Matt Chema tossed the complete-game shutout to pace the 2-0 victory in game two. Despite not recording a strikeout, Chema and game one starter Phil Haywood held the Thunder to one earned run over 13.1 innings pitched. Luke Porter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) had two hits and an RBI to lead TU. Despite the game being held at Jannen Field, Hope was considered the home team in both games. Trine previously served as the home team in a doubleheader held at Adrian College. The Thunder fall to 9-9 overall, 4-4 in the MIAA. Hope improves to 10-7 overall and 7-1 in the league.

Game One: Hope 4, Trine 2

A three-run sixth broke a one-all tie and Haywood turned in a strong effort on the mound to lead Hope to the victory.

The Dutch loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Ben Pearson cleared the bases with a three-run triple down the left field line to make the score 4-1. Eric Dawson added an RBI-single in the fourth.

Haywood allowed an earned run on six hits and walked four over 6.1 innings to earn the victory. Eric Plaehn picked up his first-career save.

Game Two: Hope 3, Trine 0

Chema's shut-down effort and some timely hitting led the Dutchmen to the sweep.

Chema allowed just four hits and two walks while working the complete game for Hope. He earned his first victory of the season with the effort.

Tim Bodine plated a run with an RBI-double as part of a two-run fifth. He later scored on a passed ball. Alex Hunt added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Brandon Mylcraine (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) was tagged with the loss for the Thunder despite a solid. Pitching in his first action since Mar. 4, the sophomore allowed an earned run on three hits, walked two and struck out two over 4.1 innings.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Apr. 5 when they travel to Alma for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
