Thunder Pitch Well, but Fall Short against Alma

ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine baseball team was swept by Alma for the second-consecutive day in an MIAA-doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Jannen Field.

The Scots were able to prevail 2-1 in each end of the doubleheader. One big hit proved to be the difference in each game. A.J. Acton drove in both runs of game one, while Yoan Delrosa plated a pair of runs with a homer in game two. Trine got solid pitching performances from Jakeb Briscoe (Kendallville, Ind./East Noble) and Vinny Slobodecki (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North). Trine falls to 9-13 overall, 4-8 in conference play. Alma improves to 13-6 overall and 7-2 in the MIAA.

Game One: Alma 2, Trine 1

All of the games runs were scored in the opening two innings before the pitching took over.

The Thunder manufactured a run in the bottom of the first to get on the board. Singles by Adam Sullivan (Fort Wayne, Ind./Elmhurst) and Andrew DeGood (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) put two on with none out. After a fielder's choice, Zach Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) lofted a sac fly to right to score Sullivan and make the score 1-0.

The Scots got their runs in the top of the second on a two-run double by Acton.

Those runs proved to be enough for Alma's pitching staff. Colin Nash worked 6.1 innings, holding the Thunder to a run on three hits. He walked one and struck out four. Philip Jock got the final two outs for the save.

Briscoe nearly matched the Scots effort. The junior went the distance, allowing two earned runs on three hits, walking two and striking out four.

Game Two: Trine 2, Alma 1

Trine struck first in the bottom of the third, but a two-run homer proved to be the difference.

Ethan Prebynski (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) scored on a fielder's choice to make the score 1-0. Initially caught in a run-down between third and home, the junior was able to avoid the tag and cross home with the run.

After an error with two outs in the sixth, Delrosa launched a homer to left to provide the only run the Scots would need.

Blake Ordiway was credited with the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He struck out two. Matt Launstein worked a scoreless seventh for the save.

Slobodecki was the tough-luck losing pitcher. The freshman allowed a single earned run on two hits, walked one and struck out two.

Thorn had three hits in game two for the Thunder.

Trine hosts Olivet Saturday, Apr. 12. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. There will be a cook-out sponsored by Trine's Student-Athletic Advisory Committee held in conjunction with the game.
