ADRIAN, MICH.-- The Trine baseball team was swept by Alma in a MIAA-doubleheader Saturday night at Adrian College's Nicolay Field.
Eric Strickler and Blake Ordiway combined on a one-hitter in the 3-1 Scot victory in game one. Alma scored five unearned runs on their way to the 8-5 victory in game two. Ordiway notched two saves for the Scots. Alex Kravat had four hits and knocked in two runs to pace Alma offensively. Ethan Prebynski (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) led Trine with two hits, two RBI's and two steals. The games were moved from Alma to Nicolay Field due to field conditions at Alma. Trine falls to 9-11 overall and 4-6 in the MIAA. The Scots improve to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in the league.
Game One: Alma 3, Trine 1
Two Alma pitchers combined on the one-hitter and a couple timely hits provided the offense for the Scots in the game one victory.
Strickler surrendered just one hit in six innings of work to earn the victory. He walked five and struck out four to improve to 2-1 on the season. Blake Ordiway worked a scoreless seventh for the save.
Kravat knocked in run with an RBI-single in the bottom of the first and later added an RBI-groundout in the third.
Prebynski scored Trine's lone run on a passed ball in the fourth. An RBI-single for Blake Leddy in the bottom of the fifth accounted for the final 3-1 margin.
The Thunder stole four bases in the game, led by Prebynski's two thefts.
Game Two: Alma 8, Trine 5
Five unearned runs gave the Scots enough offense to earn the sweep.
Prebynski, Zach Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage), Jordan Baer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Leo) and Mike Seaman (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota West) each had two hits for Trine. Prebynski knocked in two runs with a double. Jeff Phillips (Prospect, Ohio/Marion Pleasant) added an RBI-single. Baer's RBI-single in the fifth scored Thorn to tie the score at 5-5.
The Scots scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the third, all of which were unearned.
Juan Dominguez broke the five-all tie in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI-triple. He later scored when Bryan Goostrey's single made it 7-5. Goostrey had two RBI's in the game.
The Scots tacked on another unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. A.J. Acton had three RBI's in the game. Leddy joined Goostrey with two runs knocked in.
The two teams conclude the MIAA-series tomorrow at Trine University's Jannen Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
