ANGOLA, IND.-- The Trine baseball team came up on the short end of a pair of MIAA-games, as the Thunder were swept by Olivet Saturday afternoon at Jannen Field.
The Comets prevailed 1-0 in the game one pitcher's duel, and followed that with a 7-5 victory in the nightcap to earn the sweep. Jordan Baer (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) rapped out two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Thunder. Zach Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) added three hits and an RBI, while Adam Sullivan (Fort Wayne, Ind./Elmhurst) drove in a run and had two hits. Beau Langs had four hits and an RBI to lead the Comets. Trine falls to 9-16 overall, 4-10 in conference games. Olivet is 7-16 overall and 5-9 in the MIAA.
Game One: Olivet 1, Trine 0
The Comets pushed across a run in the sixth and Jake Ball shut down the Thunder bats.
Ball surrendered just four hits, walked one and struck out four to earn the victory. Ball improved to 2-3 on the season.
A leadoff single for Dylan Betcher put Olivet in business in the sixth. After a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, Peter Panos singled home Betcher to give the Comets the deciding 1-0 margin.
Andy Farrell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/St. Vincent St. Mary) was tagged with the hard-luck loss for Trine. The freshman allowed an earned run on eight hits, walked one and struck out three. Farrell has allowed three earned runs or less in all of his outings this season.
Jake Weimer (Pittsboro, Ind./Brownsburg) struck out both batters he faced. Weimer has not allowed a run over his last 6.1 innings in conference play.
Game Two: Olivet 7, trine 5
The Comets scored the first seven runs of the game and had to hold on late to earn the sweep.
Olivet scored seven runs between the second and fifth innings. A three-run second featuring RBI-singles by Stephen Botti, Langs and Austin Cleaver got the Comets on the board. Tom Kort added an RBI-groundout in the third before OC plated a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. The Comets added a run on a wild pitch in the fifth.
A two-run double by Baer got the Thunder on the board in the bottom of the fifth.
Trine added three runs in the sixth. Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford Union) picked up a sacrifice fly. Sullivan and Thorn added run-scoring hits in the inning. Thorn had three hits in the game for his fifth multi-hit game of the season.
Colin Boak picked up the victory for Olivet. He allowed five earned runs in 5.1 innings. Collin McCirie was able to come in and work 1.2 innings to nail down the save.
Ethan Prebynski (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) and Luke Porter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) each had two hits for Trine. Jeremy Spalding (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Central Catholic) did not allow an earned run in five innings of relief.
The two teams wrap up the MIAA-series with a doubleheader tomorrow at Olivet. First-pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
