Thunder Swept by Adrian

ADRIAN, MICH.-- The Trine baseball team was swept by Adrian in an MIAA-doubleheader Friday afternoon at Nicolay Field.

The conference-leading Bulldogs scored three late runs to pull away and take game one, 7-5, before taking the nightcap by a 10-3 final. Ryan Dorow had four hits and four RBI's to lead the way for Adrian. Sam Fischer added six hits and knocked in a pair of runs. Jeff Phillips (Prospect, Ohio/Marion Pleasant) had a solid day at the plate for Trine, collecting five hits and driving in a run. He also stole two bases. The Thunder fall to 11-18 overall and 6-12 in the MIAA. Adrian is 22-7 overall, 16-2 in conference play.

Game One: Adrian 7, Trine 5

Trine jumped out to a quick lead, but Adrian fought back to tie and three late runs gave the Bulldogs the victory.

The Thunder loaded the bases with none out in the top of the first. The first run of the game came home on a double play. In infield single off the bat of Luke Porter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) and a throwing error scored the other two runs in the inning to give TU a 3-0 lead.

An RBI-triple by Mitch Stefanski got adrian on the board in the bottom of the inning. An RBI-single by R.J. Rios cut the Trine lead to one before a run scored on a fielder's choice to tie the score.

Adrian took the lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI-triple by Dorow. Trine evened the score back up in the fourth on an RBI-single by Phillips. The senior finished the game with three hits for the Thunder.

The Bulldogs' deciding three-run rally came in the sixth. Pinch-hitter Braydon Gomes hit a sacrifice fly to score Rios to make the score 5-4. A two-run double by Fischer provided important insurance runs and made the score 7-4.

The Thunder rallied in the top of the seventh to score one on a sac fly by Jake Kendall (New Castle, Ind./New Castle), but that's all Trine would get.

Greg Sombati picked up the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

With a hit in each end of the doubleheader Trine's Kyle Auernhamer (Vassar, Mich./Vassar) extended his hitting-streak to four games.

Game Two: Adrian 10, Trine 3

The Bulldogs scored in all but one inning and Rylie Robinson shut down the Trine bats to give adrian the sweep.

After falling behind early, Trine scored two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Adam Sullivan (Fort Wayne, Ind./Elmhurst) knocked in both runs with a double.

The Bulldogs came right back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Ben Yax hit an RBI-single through the right side to tie the score, and Dorow knocked in two runs with another single to make the score 4-2.

Adrian would tack on one in the third, four in the fourth and another run in the sixth.

Dorow finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, a steal and two runs scored. Dorow finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI's.

Robinson pitched a complete game to get the win. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

The two teams conclude the MIAA-series tomorrow at Trine, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
