Thunder Swept in Spring Break Finale

LEESBURG, Fla.-- The Trine baseball team was swept in by Ursinus in its final games of the RussMatt Central Floriday Invitational Friday afternoon.

The Bears scored nine runs in the final four innings to take game one, 10-3. Ursinus got a five-run fifth and withstood a late Thunder rally to earn the 7-6 victory in game two. Jay Farrell and Keiran Geyer each knocked in four runs to pace the Bears, who also got a combined 21 strikeouts from their two starting pitchers. J.J. LaBounty (Avon, Ind./Covenant Christian) extended his hitting-streak to seven games, while Kory Shackle (Butler, Ohio/Mount Vernon) extended his hitting-streak to six to pace the Thunder. Trine wraps up its spring trip 3-5. Ursinus improved to 8-4.

Game One: Ursinus 10, Trine 3

A complete game by Sean Pisik and a six-run fourth led the Bears to the game one victory.

Pisik worked seven innings to earn the victory. He allowed one earned run on six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 10. Pisik improved to 1-0 on the season.

A sac fly by Farrell got Ursinus on the board first, but the Thunder rallied for single runs in their half of the first and second. Shackle knocked in a run in the bottom of the first to tie the score. Shackle wrapped up the doubleheader with a .481 average and 13 hits in his last 20 at-bats.

Colton Conn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) put Trine ahead with a RBI-single in the second. Conn has reached base safely in all eight Thunder games this season. 

The six-run fourth provided the big blow for the Bears. RBI-singles by Alex Campbell, Geyer and Farrell accounted for three of the runs. Christopher Jablonski capped off the inning with a two-run double.

The Bears added two more in the fifth and one in the seventh. Shackle added another RBI-single for the final Trine run.

Game Two: Ursinus 7, Trine 6

Another big inning paced the Bears to the game two victory.

A RBI-double by Geyer got Ursinus on the board early, but the Thunder once again rallied to take the lead. Robert Ross (Valparaiso, Ind./Washington Township) came through with an RBI-single, and Shackle scored on a double-steal to make the score 2-1 after the top of the fourth.

All of Ursinus' runs in the five-run fourth came with two outs. Geyer and Farrell each provided RBI-singles to give the Bears the lead. A bases-loaded walk brought in another run, before Austin Fuerman singled home two to cap the inning.

Trine attempted to rally in the sixth and seventh but was unable to tie the score. Kevin O'Malley (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Central) and Ethan Kirkman (Oregon, Ohio/St. John's Jesuit) each knocked in a run with RBI-groundouts in the sixth. LaBounty and Shackle added RBI-singles in the seventh.

Seth Rogensberg earned the victory earned the victory with six innings of the work. He allowed four earned runs on six hits, walked two and struck out 11.

Trine returns to action Saturday, Mar. 19 at Ohio Northern. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
