Thunder Split Series Opener with Olivet
ANGOLA, Ind. – After dropping game one, the Trine baseball team came back to take game two and earn the split in a MIAA conference doubleheader Monday afternoon at Jannen Field.
Olivet won game one in the pitchers dual between the teams, 2-1. In a comeback fashion, Trine was able to win game two 9-6. Trine pounded out a total of 16 hits in game two. Based on records that date back to 1999, the Thunder set a new record for the most sac flies in a game with four in game two. Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wisc. / Hartford Union) extended his hitting streak to nine games. He is now 16-34 in the last nine games, making his batting average .471 during his hitting streak. Trine is now 4-2 in MIAA play and 8-8 overall. Olivet is now 1-5 in MIAA play and 4-10 overall.

Game One: Olivet 2, Trine 1

Colin Boak earned the win for Olivet in game one and improved his record to 1-1.

A fielder's choice in a bases loaded situation in the top of the second allowed Olivet to score first, putting the Comets up 1-0.

An RBI single in the top of the third by Austin Cleaver improved Olivet's lead to 2-0.

Jacob Heller (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Prairie Heights) got the Thunder on the scoreboard with an RBI grounder. Heller was able to reach first on the play on an error.

Despite being tagged with the loss, Andy Farrell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent St. Mary) only allowed the Comets four hits in his seven innings pitched. Farrell struck out the side in the top of the first, and had a total of five strikeouts on the day.

Game Two: Trine 9, Olivet 6

Olivet drew first blood in game two when Jimmy Schoof safely crossed home plate in the top of the fourth. Andrew Dayfield had a suicide squeeze play to earn a RBI and put the Comets up 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

The Thunder quickly answered back when Zach Thorn (Portage, Ind. / Portage) hit an RBI standup double to put Trine on the board in the bottom of fourth. Spencer Sutton (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) tied the score back up to two apiece with an RBI single. The Thunder took the 3-2 advantage when Thorn crossed home plate off of Heller's sac fly.

Brady Johnson's RBI standup double tied the score back up to three apiece. The Comets took the lead when two runs scored that came by a double from Stephen Botti. The top of the fifth ended with Olivet up 5-3 over Trine.

Thorn was able to score for the Thunder off a sac fly RBI by Colton Conn (Cincinnati, Ohio / Indian Hill) in the bottom of the sixth. Sutton advanced home off a heads-up base running play, as Jake Kendall (New Castle, Ind. / New Castle) stole second as Sutton scored from third. The inning ended with the teams tied at five.

Johnson scored for the Comets off a throwing error from the Thunder, making the score 6-5 in the top of the seventh.

Bob Ross (Valparaiso, Ind. / Washington Township) tied things back up in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI standup double. Thorn's RBI sac fly allowed Ross to reach home plate and for the Thunder to take the lead, 7-6, going into the eighth inning.

A couple insurance runs were added to the lead in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single by J.J. LaBounty (Avon, Ind. / Covenant Christian) and a sac fly by Kory Shackle (Butler, Ohio / Mount Vernon).

Grant Frankland (Fishers, Ind. / Hamilton Southeastern) was credited with the win on the mound today and improved his record to 2-0. During his two innings pitched, Frankland only allowed two hits and did not allow an earned run.

Jake Weimer (Pittsboro, Ind. / Brownsburg) earned himself his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

The Thunder return to action tomorrow when they travel to Olivet for a MIAA conference doubleheader and to finish the series between the teams. First pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.

Trine's Austin Helm has been named the MIAA Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. Helm stopped all 10 shots he faced in 32:03 of action Saturday at Baldwin Wallace.
