Thunder Swept by Hope

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine baseball team was swept by Hope in a MIAA doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jannen Field.

A 16-hit effort and a shutout by Austin Goodyke led the Dutch to a 13-0 victory in game one. Hope led the whole way in game two, but had to withstand a late Thunder rally to hold on by a 7-6 margin to get the sweep. Colton Conn (Cincinnati, Ohio / Indian Hill) extended his hitting-streak to 16 games with a three-hit day for Trine. The Thunder fell to 16-15 overall, 12-8 in conference play. Hope improved to 18-13 overall, 13-7 in the MIAA.

Game One: Hope 13, Trine 0

Goodyke's effort on the mound and a 16-hit effort from the offense paced the Dutch to the game one victory.

Six of Hope's hits went for extra bases. Brady VanderWeele notched three hits, including two doubles, knocked in three runs and scored four more. JP Batts and Danny Carrasco each added two RBIs with multi-hit efforts. The Flying Dutchmen scored in every inning but the sixth, including four runs in the fifth and three each in the second and seventh innings.

Goodyke scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three in the complete game shutout. He improved to 3-2 on the season.

Conn, Jake Kendall (New Castle, Ind. / New Castle), Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wis./ Hartford Union) and J.J. LaBounty (Avon, Ind. / Covenant Christian) each notched one hit for the Thunder.

Game Two: Hope 7, Trine 6

Big innings in the early going were enough of a cushion for the Flying Dutchmen to withstand a late Thunder rally.

Hope scored six runs in the first two innings, with three runs each in the first and second. Ryan Konkle singled home two, while Luke Brower, Carrasco, Nick Glowacki and Landon Brower added RBIs.

The Thunder started to fight its way back into the contest with three runs in the second. A sac fly by Kendall brought home the first run before two runs crossed on an error to cut the score to 6-3.

Trine was able to cut the deficit to two an inning later on Jacob Heller's (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Prairie Heights) sacrifice fly. Carrasco returned the favor with a run-scoring hit in the fifth to push the Dutch lead back to three. The Thunder cut the deficit back to two when Zach Thorn (Portage, Ind. / Portage) doubled home a run with one of his two hits in the game.

The score would remain 7-5 until Trine rallied in the bottom of the ninth. With two on and one out, pinch-hitter Bob Ross (Valparaiso, Ind. / Washington Township) doubled home a run to cut the deficit to one. A well-executed relay throw by the Dutch resulted in the tying run being thrown at the plate. Trine was unable to tie things up, as Matt Glowacki earned the save.

The Thunder got four innings of shutout work from its bullpen to keep within striking distance. Hope got 4.2 innings of one-run ball from its own bullpen.

Trine opens another MIAA series at Adrian Friday, Apr. 29. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
