Thunder Split Doubleheader with Albion

Angola, Ind. – The Trine's baseball team split a pair of games against Albion in a MIAA conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Jannen Field.

Trine took game one, 12-11 in a comeback fashion, overcoming a nine-run deficit that was put on them early on in the game. Albion took game two, 8-2. Steven Marowski went 7-for-8 and Michael Fischbach went 6-for-8 on the day for the Britons. Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wisc. / Hartford Union) went yard in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game back up at 11 apiece with his three run shot to right field in the first game. Palmer also had a solo blast to deep center field in the bottom of the fourth in game two.

Trine is now 17-20 in MIAA play and 13-13 overall. Albion is now 13-24 in MIAA play and 6-19 overall.

The Thunder are still mathematically alive in the race for the final MIAA playoff spot. Trine trails Alma by three games in the loss column. The Scots open a four-game series against last-place Olivet tomorrow.

Game One: Trine 12, Albion 11

The Thunder won in walk-off fashion to cap off a nine-run comeback.

The Britons struck first in the first inning with RBI singles coming from Ben Gehan, Marowski and Ronnie Williams III. Marowski was able to cross home plate due to a walk in a bases loaded situation. The Thunder trailed by four going into the bottom of the first.

Albion added three runs in the top of the second from RBI singles by Jack Wyman and Logan Priebe, and an RBI double by Williams. Albion led Trine 7-0 going into the bottom of the second.

Marowski's two-RBI single added two runs to the Britons score in the top of the third.

Jacob Heller (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Prairie Heights) scored on a wild pitch from third to put the Thunder on the board. Spencer Sutton's (Chesterton, Ind. / Chesterton) RBI single put another run on the board for Trine.

Palmer started off the fourth inning rally for Trine with his RBI single. J.J. LaBounty (Avon, Ind. / Covenant Christian) scored on a double-steal to keep the fourth inning rally alive. Zach Seder (Saginaw, Mich. / Valley Ltheran) hit an RBI double and then crossed home plate due to a balk by Albion's pitcher. Zach Thorn's (Portage, Ind. / Portage) infield RBI single got Trine back into the game going into the fifth inning down by two.

Marowski hit an RBI double to make the score 10-7 going into the bottom of the fifth.

Bob Ross (Valparaiso, Ind. / Muncie Central) shortened the Briton's lead by two with his RBI single down the left foul line in the bottom of the sixth.

An insurance run was added to Albion's score in the top of the seventh when Wyman hit an RBI single.

Palmer went yard in the bottom of the seventh inning with his three-run shot on a 3-2 pitch with two outs to tie the game back up at 11 apiece. Ben Pritchett (Fishers, Ind. / Fishers) crossed home plate for the walk-off run due to an errant throw by Albion player.

Andy Farrell (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / St. Vincent St. Mary) picked up his first win in two innings of relieve work. Zachary Schulte (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) had three innings of solid relief work, only giving up one run.

Game Two: Albion 8, Trine 5

Albion hung on to its early lead. Andrew Fabry pitched a complete game for Albion and picked up his third win of the season, making his record 3-4 on the year

Marowski and Wyman started things off for the Britons with their RBI singles in the first inning.

The Thunder get on the board when Jake Kendall (New Castle, Ind. / New Castle) hit a sac fly RBI in the bottom of the third, making the score 2-1.

Palmer tied the game back up at two-apiece with his deep solo shot to center field in the bottom of the fourth.

Albion took the lead, 4-2, when Wyman hit a two run shot to right center field in the top of fifth. The Britons extended their lead to 8-2 with two runs each in the seventh and eighth.

Seder and Kory Shackle (Butler, Ohio / Mount Vernon) both ripped RBI doubles in the ninth inning. Shackle crossed home plate due to an throwing error by Albion for the final margin.

The Thunder return to action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Albion for a MIAA conference doubleheader and to finish the series between the teams. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
