ADRIAN, Mich.—The Trine baseball team dropped two games at Adrian on Saturday at Nicolay Field.
Trine moves to 16-17 overall and is 10-14 against the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Adrian improves to 28-8 and is 21-3 in conference action.
GAME ONE: Adrian 14, Trine 3
The Bulldogs held a 9-0 lead after three full innings of play.
In the top of the fourth, Drew Palmer (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford Union) led off with a hit through the right side and scored off a double to right by Jacob Heller (Fort Wayne, Ind./Prairie Heights). Zach Seder (Saginaw, Mich./Valley Lutheran) drove in the Thunder's second run.
Adrian answered scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning off two hits. The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Palmer led off with a single and advanced to second off a hit by Robert Ross (Valparaiso, Ind./Washington Township). With two outs Chase Mahoy (Darlington, Ind./North Montgomery) hit to center to drive in the Thunder's third run.
Palmer led the Thunder with two hits. Heller, Seder and Mahoy notched RBI. Grant Frankland (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) took the loss pitching two and a third inning.
Adrian was led by Ian Mikowski and Brian Killinger with three hits each. Killinger drove in four runs. Jason Schroeder moved to 6-0 this season striking out three batters in five innings pitched.
GAME TWO: Adrian 10, Trine 3
Adrian held a 5-0 lead after five complete innings.
In the top of the sixth, Colton Conn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) led off with a hit up the middle and advanced to second when Jacob Douglass (Frankfort, Ind./Western) walked. The bases were loaded after Heller hit an infield single. Nick Ricci (Hebron, Ind./Crown Point) drove in Conn of a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Bulldogs drove in five runs in the bottom of the inning off five hits and one error.
In the top of the seventh, Chris Frantz (Niles, Mich./Niles) led off with a hit through the right side. With two outs, Conn singled up the middle. Douglass hit up the middle to drive in Frantz. Palmer hit through the right side to drive in the Thunder's third run.
Trine totaled nine hits on the day, while Adrian had 13.
Conn led the Thunder with three hits, while Heller added two. Douglass, Palmer and Ricci drove in runs. Vinny Slobodecki (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) took the loss pitching five innings.
Adrian was led by Mikowski with three hits and an RBI. Killinger, Hunter Hayes, Tristin Richardson, and Miccoy Drzewiecki each had two hits. Kyle Shepherd went six innings striking out seven batters for the win.
The Thunder returns to action on Monday when they will play host to Heidelberg for a nine-inning game at 4 p.m.
