Baseball Shut Out by Heidelberg

ANGOLA, IND.  --  The Trine University baseball team suffered a 9-0 loss against Heidelberg University in a non-conference single game at Jannen Field in Angola, Ind.

The Thunder put up five hits in the game with five different players each recording a base hit.

On the mound, Trine used eight pitchers with freshman Ben West (Stanton, Mich./Central Montcalm) getting the start, but would be credited with the loss after pitching an inning and two-thirds and gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits.

Heidelberg (14-6) took control of the game in the top of the second inning with five runs that included three doubles in the frame to lead, 5-0.  The Student Princes went on to add another run in the third to extend the margin to 6-0.

Trine (8-12) looked to cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fourth with bases loaded, but Heidelberg got the final out before any Thunder runs could score, keeping the margin at 6-0.

The Student Princes platted another run in the fifth inning thanks to a solo homer run, making the score 7-0.  Trine again looked to rally offensively in the bottom of the inning with bases loaded for the second straight inning, but the Heidelberg defense shut down the momentum by getting the final out before the Thunder could cross homeplate, keeping the possible shut out intact, 7-0.

The score remained the same until the top of the ninth when Heidelberg scored its final two runs and then recorded a one-two-three inning defensively in Trine's final at-bats to cruise to the 9-0 final.

Trine will resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play when it travels to Alma, Mich. to begin a four-game series against Alma College starting on Saturday, Apr. 7 with a doubleheader.  The first game of the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
