Trine Falls to Adrian in Single Nine Inning Game

ANGOLA, IND.  --  The Trine University baseball team fell to Adrian (Mich.) College in a nine-inning game as part of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Jannen Field in Angola, Ind.  The second game of the twinbill was postponed.

Trine (14-21, 7-16 MIAA) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI-single by senior Zach Schulte (Sterling Heights, Mich./Warren Cousino).  Adrian (28-6, 20-3 MIAA) came right back in the top half of the fourth and crossed home plate four times highlighted by a run-scoring double and then a two-RBI double that made it a 4-1 ball game.

The Bulldogs then added another run in the top of the sixth and came on a RBI base hit after Adrian got a base runner to lead off the inning on a single and later came around to score.  The Thunder got the run back in their half of the seventh inning thanks to a defensive error that allowed senior Cale Hall (Orleans, Ind./Orleans) to score from second base and made the score, 5-2.

But that was as close as Trine got as Adrian went on to add a pair of runs in the eighth and another run in the ninth en route to an 8-2 final.

Trine was held to just three hits in the game with two of those hits coming from Schulte who went two-of-three overall in addition to the run scored.  Junior Jake Roddy (Angola, Ind./Angola) recorded the other hit and was one-of-four overall.

On the mound, sophomore Adam Wheaton (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Prep) started on the mound and pitched seven-and-a-third innings, but suffered the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on 13 hits and struck out three batters.  Sophomore Kyle Robinson (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) pitched two thirds of an inning in relief and gave up a run on a hit and had one strikeout.  Junior Caleb Deiter (Whiteland, Ind./Whiteland Community) finished the game and allowed on run on two hits and had a strikeout in one complete inning.

The second game of the doubleheader against Adrian has yet to be officially rescheduled.

Trine is scheduled to begin a four-game series against Albion (Mich.) College on Friday, May 3 with a doubleheader at Jannen Field.  The first game of the MIAA four-game series is slated to start at 2 p.m.
