Baseball's Comeback Not Enough

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Trine University baseball team mounted a comeback attempt in the eighth inning but it was not enough and they would fall in the opening contest of the 2021 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Baseball Tournament to their hosts from Hope College.

Senior Adam Wheaton (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Hackett Catholic Prep) started the contest on the bump for the Thunder and pitched seven solid innings for the team. He allowed four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five.

The Flying Dutch struck first in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs. They would then add another run in the seventh inning to take a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Thunder responded by getting runners at the corners. Junior Brenden Warner (Richland, Mich. / Hackett Catholic Prep) came up with the RBI single to score the first run and leave runners still at the corners. Sophomore Cory Erbskorn (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold) followed up with another single to bring the score to 4-2.

Hope would end the threat following the pair of runs and would shut out Trine through the rest of the contest.

The Thunder fall to 6-27 overall following the loss. They will advance to an elimination game against Albion College tomorrow, Thursday, May 13 at 1 p.m. The contest will be hosted by Hope with the winner making a quick turnaround to compete again at 4 p.m.
