Josh Hoogewerf and Brenden Warner Awarded Second Team All-MIAA

FREELAND, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) has announced the 2022 All-MIAA recipients for baseball. The Trine University baseball team had two student-athletes recognized on the Second Team.

Starting pitcher Josh Hoogewerf [Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point] and outfielder Brenden Warner [Richland, Mich. / Hackett Catholic Prep] each earned all-conference honors for the first time in their careers.

The sophomore Hoogewerf had the third-lowest earned run average in the MIAA at 4.04 and was third in most innings pitched with 62.1. Additionally, he was fifth in strikeouts with 42 and averaged 6.06 K's per nine innings. In his 12 appearances (10 starts), Hoogewerf allowed 63 hits, 35 runs (28 earned), while walking 24. Defensively, he made four putouts with six assists and a perfect fielding percentage in his 10 chances.

Early in the year, Hoogewerf twirled seven innings of one-hit baseball in a 1-0 win against John Carroll University with nine strikeouts. He also was key in MIAA wins at Albion College where he went 6.2 and surrendered one unearned run, and at home versus Olivet College by going six shutout innings. Overall this season, seven times he allowed two or fewer runs in his starts.

Warner was fifth in the MIAA in hits with 51 on the year. At .359, the senior leftfielder led the team and was seventh in the conference in batting average. He was also best on the Thunder team in extra base hits (13) and total bases (65) in his 36 games played. Warner finished the year with 22 runs scored, 14 RBIs, 11 walks, three stolen bases, a .421 on-base percentage and .458 slugging percentage with five hit by pitches, one sacrifice fly and one sacrifice hit.

Warner was red hot towards the end of the spring break trip. He had multiple hits in three consecutive victories and tallied seven hits, three doubles and five runs scored in that stretch. Warner also smacked a go-ahead double down the left field line to help secure a 7-5 win over Kalamazoo College on the road.
