ACHA D2 Wins Comeback Shootout Thriller Over Adrian College

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine ACHA D2 men's hockey team came from behind to defeat Adrian College 4-3 on the back of a 2-1 shootout win.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in just the third minute if the game. Three minutes later the Thunder responded with a power play goal from Niccolo Mombelli.

Adrian would go on to score the next two goals to pull ahead 3-1 at the middle point of the game. With just a minute left in the second period Trine's Brandon Bornkamp scored his team-high 11th goal of the season. The Thunder would tie the game in the 14th minute of the third period when Sean Schirripa scored.

Neither team was able to break the tie during the rest of regulation or during the five minutes of the four-on-four overtime period, so the game would have to be decided by a best of three shootout.

Bornkamp took the first attempt for the Thunder and put it past the Adrian goaltender. Thunder goaltender Aaron Brickman kept the first two attempts from the Bulldogs out of the net, but was unable to stop the third forcing the teams to continue the shootout in sudden death fashion. It did not take long as Beckman once again made a spectacular save and Braeden Pearl put a shot over the opposing goaltender to win the game for the Thunder.

Trine will next take the ice Thursday, Oct. 26 when they travel to Eastern Michigan University at 7:00 p.m.
