ACHA D2 Sweeps Michigan State

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's ACHA D2 hockey team completed the convincing weekend sweep of Michigan State University by coming up with the 13-2 victory after also winning on Friday by the score of 8-1.

On Friday, two members of the Thunder led the way with two goals each. Juniors Tanner Bennett (Columbus, Ind.) and Joe Laskero (Orland Park, Ill.) accounted for half of the Trine offense between them as the team rolled to the 8-1 victory.

Today, the story was much the same, as Trine surged out to a 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game, with four different skaters tallying goals in the stretch. The Spartans finished the first period scoring with the first of their two goals in the game to enter the first intermission down 4-1.

The two defenses took hold for the first half of the third period with neither team finding the net until there were just eight minutes remaining in the stanza. But then the Thunder went on another offensive streak scoring six goals in six minutes to build a 10-1 lead heading into the second intermission

Trine added another three goals in the third before allowing the final Michigan State goal to end the game with the 13-2 victory.

Three members of the Thunder finished the game with multi-goal nights. Sophomore Niccolo Mombelli (Solothurn, Switzerland) led the way by recording a hat trick while both freshman Jayson Dimizio (Goleta, Calif.) and sophomore Nicholas Ludeman (Heymarket, Va.) came away with two goals in the contest.

The Thunder improve to 9-6 following the pair of victories. They will next take the ice when they host Wisconsin Eau-Claire on Friday, Dec. 7. The game is scheduled to start at 9 p.m.
