ACHA D3 Surge Past IPFW

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine men's ACHA D3 hockey team stormed past IPFW this evening by the score of 11-0.

The Thunder started their night early scoring just 29 seconds into the contest. The goal came from freshman forward Jacob Ruelle (Niles, Mich.) with Jacob Yehle (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tallying the assist. While the goal would be Ruelle's only of the night he would add a team-high three assists to finish the night with four points.

Trine would add two more goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman blue-liner Tyler Groth (South Lyon, Mich.) and junior Olli Jansson (Oulu, Finland) would record those goals.

The Thunder started the scoring in the second period just as quickly as the first, with junior Trenton Mulnix (Leslie, Mich.) scoring his first goal of the evening just 27 seconds into the period. Groth would tally his lone assist of the contest on the goal.

Trine would pour on the goals in the period entering the second intermission with a commanding 11-0 lead. Mulnix would add two more goals in the period to finish off his hat-trick in just 17 minutes of game time. He would add an assist to finish tied with Ruelle with a team-high four points in the contest. Groth would add a second goal on the night to finish just behind them with three points of his own. Freshman defender Ryan Dumond (Woodstock, Ga.) would also finish the night with three points including two goals and an assist. Freshman forward Michael Wiggins (Peoria, Ariz.) would tie Ruelle for most assists in the contest with three.

On the other side of the ice, sophomore goalie Justin Savage (Granger, Ind.) secured his first shutout of the season by finishing the night with 24 saves. The best scoring chance for the Mastodons came on a breakaway shot which Savage turned aside with a brilliant toe-save.

The Thunder will faceoff next in a weekend doubleheader with Ball State University. They travel to Muncie, Ind. for a 9:30 p.m. contest on Friday, Dec. 8. They then return to Angola for a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Dec. 9.
