Carswell Leading Nation in Rushing; Finalist for HERO Sports Award

ANGOLA, Ind. -- Following a big performance Saturday, Trine's Lamar Carswell leads the nation in rushing yards.

Carswell (Toledo, Ohio / St. Francis de Sales) racked up 322 yards on 23 carries in Saturday's 62-19 Homecoming victory over Concordia (Ill.) to run his season total to 772 yards, the most in NCAA Division III this season. Carswell's performance Saturday was the second-highest rushing total in a game in program history. The sophomore's efforts resulted in him being named a finalist for HERO Sports "HERO" of the Week honor.

HERO Sports "HERO of the Week" recognizes the top single-game performances of the week in Division III football. The winner of the award is determined by fan vote from among five offensive and five defensive candidates.

Carswell's latest performance was the second-most rushing yards in a game in team history. The 322 yards were the most by any Division III back this year. He averaged 14 yards per carry to improve his season-average to 10.87 yards per tote, the best mark in the nation. If Carswell were to maintain that pace over the course of the season, he would set a new national record.

With three touchdowns Saturday, Carswell moved into a tie for third in the nation with nine rushing TDs. He also ranks sixth in the nation in scoring (14 points per game) and seventh in all-purpose yards per game (205).

Trine set new team records with 683 yards of total offense and 537 rushing yards in Saturday's 62-19 victory over Concordia. The Thunder scored 50 points in 15:10 of game action in the second half, including the final 42 points of the contest. The 62 points scored marked the fourth time Trine had topped 60 points in a game in team history and were tied for the third-highest mark in program history.

Trine opens MIAA play this Saturday at home against defending MIAA-Champion Albion. Kickoff in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The team will be dedicating the Jason A. Stechschulte Football All-American Room in Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium prior to the game. Former All-Americans in attendance will be recognized on-field at halftime of the game. All former Thunder football players are invited to attend the dedication.
