Five Thunder Football Players Named to Honors Society

IRVING, Texas-- Five Trine football seniors were recognized by the National Football Foundation as members of the 2017 NFF Hampshire Honors Society, the foundation announced today.

Zachary Denig (Adrian, Mich. / Madison), Charles Gladieux (Archbold, Ohio / Archbold), Jacob Quain (Grand Ledge, Mich. / Grand Ledge), Brandon Rooze (West Lafayette, Ind. / Benton Central) and Joshua Sheron (Marion, Ind. / Marion) were all recognized as members of the 2017 NFF Hampshire Honors Society. The society is comprised of football players from all divisions who each maintained a G.P.A. of at 3.2 throughout their college careers. Each student-athlete will receive a certificate commemorating the achievement.

Denig's career academic honors also include recognition as the winner of the MIAA's Pete Schmidt Memorial Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is the conference's highest scholar-athlete honor for football. The cancer survivor was also a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.

Rooze was named a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Football team, which recognizes the nation's best football players for their combined work athletically and in the classroom. He was also a member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and served as the president of Trine's Student Athletic Advisory Committee.

Quain and Gladieux were each members of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll during their time at Trine. Sheron was named to the Dean's List multiple times. Rooze and Sheron each currently serve as student assistants for the Thunder football team.

A total of 1,089 players from 297 schools qualified for membership in the Hampshire Honor Society's 11th year, both new single-year records in the history of the program.

"We are pleased to see a record number of colleges and universities embrace the Hampshire Honor Society this year," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "Over the past decade, it has become a powerful vehicle for schools to recognize their college football players who have distinguished themselves both academically and athletically, and we congratulate the schools and each of these young men for their commitment to excellence in all aspects of their lives."

Trine concluded last season 6-4 overall and placed fourth in the MIAA with a 3-3 conference mark. The Thunder produced two All-Region performers and had seven players earn conference recognition from the MIAA.

The 2017 season kicks off Thursday, Aug. 31 with the traditional in-state rivalry opener against Manchester. This year's game will begin at 7:30 p.m. under the lights of Fred Zollner Athletic Stadium.
