ANGOLA, IND. -- Trine University senior football player Jeffery Barnett (Fremont, Ohio/Ross) has been selected as this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association "Player of the Week" on special teams.
Barnett helped the Thunder to a 34-13 win against Bluffton University this past weekend in which he had a 95-yard kickoff return for a TD. It marked his third career kickoff return for touchdown which places him first all-time in that category. His 95 yard return equalled a return he had last year against Albion (Mich.) College which ranked in a tie for the third longest kick return in a game.
Barnett finished the game against the Beavers with a total of 113 return yards and was also the team's leading receiver with five catches for 47 yards.
For his career as a kick returner, Barnett currently ranks second in return yards (1,755), returns (64) and is third in average yards per return (27.4). Barnett is a three-time All-MIAA honoree as a return specialist, including first-team accolades the past two seasons. He also garnered All-Region honors twice as a kick returner.
Trine will play its first road game of the season when it travels to Plymouth, Wis. on Saturday (Sept. 15) to take on Lakeland University. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EST.
