Toney Bergman joined the Trine football coaching staff prior to the 2010 season with 23 years of football coaching experience. Bergman serves as the defensive backs coach.

In his first season at Trine, Bergman coached Thunder defensive back Aaron Selking to the MIAA Defensive MVP Award. The Thunder have had 10 all-conference performers in the secondary under Bergman's guidance.

Under Bergman's guidance, cornerback Marcus Winters tied Selking's school record with eight interceptions in 2016. Winters finished the regular season ranked second in the nation in INTs and third in passes defended.

During the 2017 season, the Trine defensive secondary recorded a school single-season record 23 interceptions with 14 of those coming from the duo of defensive backs Cayleel Hill and Marcus Winters.  Hill tied the individual single-season mark with eight "picks," while Winters added six INTs.  Winters was also named the MIAA Defensive "MVP" as well as being a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award which is given to the top defensive player amongst Division II, III and NAIA institutions.  In addition, Winters garnered All-Region and All-American honors.  Trine's 23 interceptions ranked in a tie for sixth most in NCAA Division III. 

In 2018, Winters repeated as the MIAA Defensive "MVP" and earned All-American honors by D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as well as being a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award for the second straight year.  As a squad, the defensive secondary led the MIAA in interceptions with 13, including three returned for touchdowns, and also led the conference in fewist passing yards allowed at 147.5 yards per game.  Trine's passing yards allowed per game (147.5) ranked as the 11th lowest in NCAA Divison III.  

The 2019 season saw Trine’s defense rank 34th in NCAA Division III allowing 294.3 yards per game.  The Thunder ranked in the top-20 in fewest passing yards allowed per game at 156.6 to rank 16th overall.  In the MIAA, Trine’s defense took top honors in fewest yards allowed and led the conference in sacks (30).  The defensive secondary had one player earn All-MIAA honors in Damian Bowker who was a second-team pick.

Prior to his arrival at Trine, Bergman was the Head Football Coach at Bellmont High School for eight years where he led the Braves to the school’s first and only Class 3A Football State Championship in 2008. During his coaching tenure Bergman he has been named NHC Coach of the Year, GameNight Magazine Coach of the Year, Motorola 3A Coach of the Year, Colts Coach of the Week, Indiana Football Digest Griddy’s 3A Coach of the Year, Old Spice Coach of the Year, and a North All-Star Coach. 

Bergman also spent two years as an assistant coach with the Fort Wayne Freedom. Bergman also served as an assistant wrestling coach at Bellmont High School and was part of the 1994 State Championship and the 1995 State Runner-Up Teams.

A graduate of Purdue University, Bergman received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a minor in Health.  Bergman is also a certified Strength and Conditioning Coach. Bergman and his wife Deb have three children: Jacob, Aaron, and Emily.
