Second Half Run Leads Hope Over Trine

HOLLAND, MICH.-- Trine's men's basketball team played MIAA-foe Hope tough through the the first half, but a big second half run helped the Flying Dutchmen pull away for a 75-61 win Thursday night at DeVos Fieldhouse.

A 13-0 run in the second half turned a four-point Hope lead into a 17-point advantage. Trine would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way. Alex Edison led four Flying Dutchmen in double-figures with 15 points. The Flying Dutchmen shot 52 percent from the field (27-of-52). Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) paced Trine with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Trine falls to 7-5 overall and opens MIAA conference play 0-1. Hope improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Tyler Good (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen) added 11 points, five rebounds and three assists for Trine. The Thunder were held to 36 percent shooting (22-of-62), including just 3-of-16 from three-point range (19 percent).

Nate VanArendonk hit all six of his field goal attempts to score 12 points for Hope. Ben Gardner added 12 points and six boards, while Corey McMahon came off the bench to notch 10 points. The Flying Dutchmen bench outscored their Trine counterparts 30-14. Hope also held a 38-30 advantage in the paint.

Trine started hot and raced out to an 11-6 lead just over four minutes into the contest. Four different players scored during the opening stretch, which saw the Thunder connect on their first four field-goal attempts and knock down three free throws.

Hope would claw back and knot the score several times over the following minutes. The Flying Dutchmen broke through and took the lead for good on a Cody Stuive three with 6:04 to play in the first half. Hope went in to the break clinging to a 35-31 lead.

The Thunder were able to hang around early in the second half and keep the deficit to four before Hope's 13-0 broke open the contest. The Flying Dutchmen hit 5-of-7 from the field and were 2-of-2 from the free throw line during their big run, which concluded with Hope leading 53-36 with 11:40 remaining in the contest. The Dutchmen would go on to lead by as many as 21, with Trine getting no closer than 10 the rest of the way.

Trine will look to rebound when they host Adrian this Saturday, Jan. 11 at 3:00 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
