ALMA, MICH.—Trine's men's basketball team rode a hot-shooting night to a 74-56 victory over Alma in MIAA-action Saturday evening at Art Smith Arena.
The Thunder shot 51 percent on the night (28-of-55). Tyler Good (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen) led the way for Trine with a career-high 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Good's performance was the second scoring effort of 30+ points by a Thunder player this season. Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) notched his third double-double of the season, scoring 12 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Brandon Krause led Alma with 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting. He added six rebounds. Trine improves to 10-5 on the season and 3-1 in MIAA play. Alma falls to 2-12 overall, 1-2 in the MIAA.
Nick Tatu (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) scored 12 points, hitting 3-of-5 from long distance. Will Dixon (Indianapolis, Ind./Zionsville) added 10 points for Trine. The Thunder turned 12 Alma turnovers into 17 points, while committing just eight turnovers themselves.
Scott Nikodemski scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting for Alma, while Chase Fairchild added 10 points on a 4-of-7 effort from the field. The Scots shot 38 percent on the evening (17-of-45). Alma is the third-straight MIAA opponent Trine has held below 60 points. The Thunder have the best scoring defense in the conference.
The Scots took a 15-13 lead at the 12:42 mark on a Krause three, but the rest of the first half belonged to Trine. The Thunder finished the half strong with a 29-15 surge to open up a 42-30 lead at the break. Trine shot 61 percent from the field in the first half (19-of-31).
The momentum carried over to the second half as Trine would go on to lead by as much as 70-45 on a Good dunk with 8:33 to play. Good scored 10 of his points as part of a 23-9 surge that opened up the 25-point lead. The junior has now scored in double-figures in 10-straight games and has been held below 10 points just twice this season.
Trine returns to action this Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they travel to Calvin. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
