Holmquist Named MIAA Player of the Week

FREELAND, MICH.-- Trine's Jared Holmquist has been named MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) averaged 22.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in leading the Thunder to a 2-1 record last week. He notched a pair of double-doubles, and shot 67 percent from the field (26-of-39). The junior started his week with 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting in a 62-58 victory over St. Vincent. He followed that up with a 29-point, 10-rebound effort in a loss to Case Western Reserve in the championship game of the Bill Sudeck Holiday Tournament. Holmquist concluded his week by scoring 13 points, all in the second half, and grabbing 10 rebounds in a 70-58 victory over Ohio Northern. He is being being honored as Player of the Week for the first time this season and the second time in his career.

On the season, Holmquist is averaging 13.8 points per game on a 56.9 percent shooting clip. Both marks rank sixth in the MIAA. The junior is tied for third in the conference in both rebounds per game (6.2), and blocked shots per game (1.1). The center has been a workhorse, playing a fraction under 31 minutes per game- the third highest total in the conference. He has notched two double-doubles this year.

Holmquist topped a pair of career milestones this week. He moved into fourth on Trine's all-time list with 63 career blocks, and became the second player in the Division-III era (2004-present) to top 400 career rebounds. He ranks second in total rebounds in the Division-III era at Trine, averaging 6.5 boards per game in his career.

Trine enters MIAA play 7-4 overall. The Thunder will host conference-rival Hope this Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
