Thunder Win Big on Senior Day

ANGOLA, Ind.-- Trine locked up a first round home game in the MIAA Tournament on Senior Day, earning a 71-58 victory over Olivet Saturday afternoon in Hershey Hall.

The win gives the Thunder the no. 2 seed in the upcoming MIAA Tournament, and a home game Thursday in Hershey Hall. Jared Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) scored 26 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists to lead the Thunder. Seventeen of the junior's points came in the second half. DeOndre Callahan and Jake Zielinski each scored 12 points to pace the Comets. Trine concludes the regular-season 17-8 overall, with a 10-4 mark in conference play. The win total is the team's highest as a member of NCAA Division III, and its best since the 2000-01 season. Olivet conlcudes the season 4-21 overall, 2-12 in the MIAA.

The Thunder honored seniors Tyler Good (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen), Jake Bagley (Van Wert, Ohio/Van Wert) and Dustin Hall (Fort Wayne, Ind./South Side) prior to the final regular-season home games of their careers. The trio combined for 35 points.

Good led the seniors with 18 points on a 6-of-12 performance from the floor. Hall scored a season-high 10 points and came away with four steals. Bagley added seven points and six boards.

A 15-4 run over a six-minute span of the first half helped the Thunder seize control. Good scored seven of his points during that run, which gave Trine its first double-digit lead.

Holmquist took over early in the second half to push the lead above 20 for the first time. The center scored 11 of the team's first 18 points of the second half as the Thunder pushed the lead to 59-38 with 12:28 to play. Olivet would never seriously threaten the rest of the afternoon.

Trine outrebounded Olivet by a 37-28 margin and held a 30-14 edge in points in the paint.

Trine will host Hope in the MIAA Tournament Semifinals this Thursday, Feb. 26. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Hershey Hall.
