Holmquist named MIAA Player of the Week

FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Jared Holmquist has been named the MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Holmquist (Reed City, Mich./Reed City) notched two double-doubles on the week, leading the Thunder to non-conference victories over Heidelberg and North Park to open the season. The senior averaged 28.5 points per contest on a 55.6 percent (20-of-36) shooting effort from the field in addition to contributing 11 rebounds, 1.5 assists and one block per game. He is being named an MIAA Player of the Week for the first time this season and the third time in his career. His efforts have helped lead Trine to a 2-0 start.

After an All-MIAA campaign last season, Holmquist has picked up right where he left off in the first two games of the 2015-16 campaign. He scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots in Monday's season-opening 65-50 victory over Heidelberg. His encore against North Park was even better, as he scored a career-high 33 points to go along with 11 rebounds in the 78-60 victory.

Holmquist's effort against North Park pushed the senior past the 1,000-career point milestone. He is the fifth player to accomplish that feat since Trine joined NCAA Division III in 2004. His two double-doubles this week give him 14 such efforts in his career. Last season, Holmquist led the MIAA in scoring in conference games and finished second in the MIAA in rebounding in league action.

Holmquist and the Thunder will face another quality opponent this Tuesday, Nov. 24 when they travel to face no. 13 Ohio Wesleyan. Trine won last season's over the Battling Bishops, then ranked no. 6 in the nation, 87-82 in Hershey Hall.

Tip-off of Tuesday's contest is slated for 6 p.m.
