FREELAND, Mich.-- Trine's Will Dixon has been named the MIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the Conference announced Monday.
Dixon (Indianapolis, Ind./Zionsville) was named the Most Valuable Player of the Carnegie Mellon DoubleTree Invitational after leading the Thunder to a pair of victories to win the tournament title over the weekend. Dixon averaged 26 points on 55 percent shooting over the course of the two games. He scored 31 points to top the 30-point plateau for the fifth time in his career in Saturday's victory over Chatham. He followed that up with a 21-point performance in a 15-point victory over previously-unbeaten Carnegie Mellon in the tournament championship. Dixon is being honored as player of the week for the first time this season and thid time in his career.
The last two games have served as a breakout for Dixon this season. He ranks second on the Thunder and sixth in the MIAA in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per contest. The junior is shooting 44 percent from the field. He is also contributing 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
An All-MIAA First Team performer last year, Dixon is closing in on 1,000 career points. He has scored 920 in his career. Dixon has been a prolific scorer in his time at Trine, averaging 16.1 points per game. That mark ranks sixth in team history. Dixon is a career 82 percent shooter from the free throw line, which ranks seventh in program history.
Trine is off to a 4-1 start after claiming victories over Chatham and Carnegie Mellon this week. The Thunder have played a tough schedule to date, with just one of the team's opponents currently holding a losing record. Trine's lone loss came to undefeated and 13th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan.
The Thunder return to action next Wednesday, Dec. 9 at Anderson. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
