ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine men's basketball team rode an explosive scoring effort to a 119-61 victory over Great Lakes Christian in non-conference action Tuesday night in Hershey Hall.
The 119 points represented the sixth-most scored by a Thunder team in program history and are the most scored by a Trine team since 2004. The Thunder shot a scalding 59.3 percent (48-of-81), the fourth-best shooting percentage on record in a game in team history. Six players scored in double figures and 13 players scored overall for the Thunder. Trine improved to 4-3 overall with the victory. The Lakers fell to 0-15 on the season.
Freshman Kamron Herrington (Lapel, Ind. / Lapel) led the scoring outburst with a career-high 25 points. Herrington shot a blistering 9-of-11 (82 percent) from the field and knocked down 4-of-5 attempts from three-point range.
Herrington's scoring paced an 80-point effort from the Thunder bench. Jared Dishop (Napoleon, Ohio / Liberty Center) scored a career-high 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting to contribute to the efforts off the bench. Myles Copeland (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) added 11 points and knocked down all four of his field goal attempts, while Jordan Kreglow (Gibsonburg, Ohio / Gibsonburg) chipped in 10 while hitting 4-of-5 from the field.
Darek Ditto (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan), Jason Clune (Meadville, Pa. / Meadville) and Tristan Upchurch (Maryville, Tenn. / Maryville) each notched career-highs off the bench. Ditto and Clune each tallied eight points. Ditton notched three rebounds, while Clune added six rebounds and two assists. Upchurch scored five points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Thunder went on a 34-0 run over a span of 6:20 in the second half to turn a 12-point lead into the rout. Trine shot 65 percent (28-of-43) and got scoring contributions from 10 players in the final 20 minutes. Herrington scored 16 of his points in just six minutes of action, knocking down all six of his field goal attempts. The Thunder held Great Lakes Christian to a 5-of-30 effort from the field (16.7 percent) in the second half.
Romondo Ray paced Great Lakes Christian with 24 points. He knocked down 7-of-15 from the field and added nine rebounds.
Trine returns to action with a road tip to face No. 18 North Park. The Thunder and Vikings will square off Saturday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. Trine will then continue on its road trip to face Wisconsin-Whitewater, a team receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll on Monday, Dec. 19.
