Smith, Corcoran Selected to NABC Academic Honors Court

KANSAS CITY, MO.  --  Juniors Pete Smith (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) and Sean Corcoran (Flint, Mich./Powers) represented the Trine University men's basketball team on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for their accomplishments in the classroom.

The NABC Honors Court recognizes those men's collegiate basketball student-athletes who excelled off the court and the hard work they exhibited in academics during the past season.  In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet four criteria that includes being a junior or senior academically and a varsity player, must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher, must have matriculated at least one year at their current institution and a member of a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

Smith, a management major, made an immediate impact for the Thunder as the starting point guard.  He started 25 out of 26 games and was second on the team in scoring at 14.5 ppg while shooting 44.0 percent (133-of-302) overall.  He led the Thunder, as well as the MIAA, in three-point shooting with 79 made triples in 183 attempts (43.2 percent).  During the season, Smith made 11 three-pointers in a win at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College to set a Trine single-game record.  Smith finished with 33 points in the game against the Hornets which was a season-high and has scored in double figures in all but five games. 

He also led the team in three other statistical categories including free-throw percentage (89.2), assists (94) and steals (31).  Following the season, Smith was tabbed as a second-team All-MIAA player.

Corcoran, an exercise science major, played in 17 games which included three starts.  Corcoran scored 37 points (2.2 ppg.) on 68.0 percent (17-of-25) shooting.  He scored a season-best eight points in a 71-61 win against Manchester University in the third game of the 2017-18 season.  Corcoran also grabbed 35 rebounds (2.1 rebounds per game) to go along with four assists, five blocked shots and a pair of steals.  His five blocks ranked fifth most on the team.
