Smith Hits Six Triples in Rout of Adrian

ANGOLA, IND.  --  Senior Pete Smith (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) connected on six triples to finish with a team-high 18 points in Trine University men's basketball rout of Adrian (Mich.) College, 94-53, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play at the MTI Center in Angola, Ind.

Smith finished shooting six-of-10 (60.0 percent), all three-pointers, for the game to go along with three assists and a pair of rebounds.  He was one of three players to score in double figures against the Bulldogs with junior Langston Johnson (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) scoring 14 points, including 12 points from behind the arc, and senior Ellis Cummings (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) adding 12 points in addition to a team-high six rebounds.

As a team, the Thunder shot 63.9 percent (39-of-61) from the field overall and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from long range.  The Trine defense forced 20 Adrian turnovers in the game which it converted into 20 points.

It was all Trine in the first half as the Thunder outscored Adrian, 42-11.  With the score tied at 2-2 early in the game, Trine (15-5, 8-1 MIAA) went on a 15-4 scoring run that ended in a jumper by junior Marcus Winters (Toledo, Ohio/Central Catholic) and made the score 17-6 with 11 minutes to go in the period.

After the Winters bucket, Adrian (3-17, 0-9 MIAA) scored on a jumper of its own, but would not score again for the next 10:25.  The Thunder capitalized on the opportunity with a 25-0 run which was capped by a bucket by Johnson at the 2:11 mark and gave Trine a 34-point margin, 42-8.

Just seconds remaining before halftime, Adrian connected on a three-pointer to end the scoreless streak, but Trine led by a commanding, 42-11, heading into the locker rooms.

In the second half, the Adrian offense picked up with 42 points, but never threatened the Trine lead as the Thunder added 52 points of their own in the final 20 minutes.  The closest the Bulldogs got was 27 points with a 67-40 deficit with just under eight minutes left in the contest.

Trine ended the game by scoring the final eight points which included a three-pointer by freshman Reese McGinsie (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) with 45 seconds left to give the Thunder their largest lead of the game of 41 points en route to the final score of 94-53.

Trine will look to continue its seven-game winning streak when it travels to Olivet, Mich. for a MIAA game against Olivet College that was rescheduled from earlier this week.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
