John Wysong joined the Trine basketball program in the Spring of 2018. Wysong played three years of varsity basketball for his alma mater (then Tri-State University) and has coached nine years of college basketball. He was a head high school basketball coach for 26 years in northern Indiana.

In the last six seasons as a member of the coaching staff at Trine, the Thunder have amassed an impressive record of 121-38. That time was highlighted by the team's National Championship run in the 2023-24 season and undefeated regular season in 2020-21. Trine won Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships in each of these years as well.

As a college player, Wysong was inducted into Trine’s Hall of Fame in 2008 as he was the captain, leading scorer, and set a single-season record for assists during his senior season. His senior-year team was inducted into Trine’s Hall of Fame in 2007; the team went undefeated in District 21 (Indiana) play while winning both the conference and district titles finishing 25-7 along with advancing to the "Sweet 16" level in the NAIA National Tournament when the NAIA was one class. That year, Trine won 20 of their last 22 games to reach the "Sweet 16." Wysong was voted MVP and selected first-team all-conference; one of 10 players named to the all-state team. Trine won the conference all three years while Wysong was a member of the team.

After his senior year, Wysong began his coaching career at Trine when legendary Coach Mark Peterman asked him to assist. The team went 20-10, won the conference and made the District 21 playoffs. Wysong also coached at Grace College with long-time coaching great James Kessler for two years. The Grace team was 55-12 in those two seasons, won their conference both seasons and finished as runners-up in District play with a 24-7 record in his first year. The next year, the team went 31-5, won the District and finished in the "Sweet 16" in the NAIA National Tournament. The NAIA was one class in that year as well.

As a high school head coach, Wysong's teams won five sectional titles and two regional titles. His best post-season accomplishments were advancing to the Elite 8 level in the one-class system along with advancing to the "Final Four" in the 2A tournament. He has 325 wins for his high school coaching career.
