ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine men's golf team opened its season yesterday as the team hosted the Ken Venturi Invitational on the links of Zollner Golf Course.
Each team had three two-man teams with three different formats. Six holes were played best ball, six holes were played scramble and the final six were played alternate shot- all stroke play.
Trine's "W" group of golfers combined for a score of 201 to place second. Austin Tevlin (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and Kevin Berry (Holly, Mich./Fenton) combined for a 64 to lead that group. The duo scored a 19 in scramble, tied for the second-best score in that format.
Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) and Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio/Liberty Center) combined for a 65, while Corey Bremigan (Russia, Ohio/Russia) and Matt Silver (Columbus Grove, Ohio/Columbus Grove) rounded things out with a 72.
Trine's "Y" group, led by Trenton Murphy (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) and Tanner Neeley (Mentone, Ind./Tippecanoe Valley) placed fifth. Murphy and Neeley teamed up to card a 69.
Trine's "X" and "Z" groups rounded out the team's performers in the match. Mitch Westra (Granger, Ind./Penn) and Spencer Graf (Granger, Ind./Penn) combined for a 71 to lead the "Z" group. Jason Niese (Leipsic, Ohio/Leipsic) and Jordan Davidhizar (Millersburg, Ind./Fairfield) earned a 72 to lead the "X" group.
