Thunder Win Bill Gettig Match Play Invitational

ANGOLA, Ind.-- The Trine men's golf team won the Bill Gettig Match Play Invitational, contested Wednesday on the home links of Zollner Golf Course.

The Thunder defeated MIAA-rival Hope in the championship round, with all four Trine golfers winning their head-to-head matchups to take home the tournament title. The Thunder also defeated Indiana Tech in the opening round, before beating St. Francis (Ind.) in the championship flight semifinals. Trine's victorious group was made up of Connor Dwyer (Coldwater, Mich. / Coldwater), Cody Knapp (Liberty Center, Ohio / Liberty Center), Corey Bremigan (Russia, Ohio / Russia) and Austin Tevlin (Edwardsburg, Mich. / Edwardsburg).

The tournament consisted of three nine-hole rounds. Players earned points for their team in head-to-head play based on the number of holes on which an individual earned a better score.

Dwyer, Tevlin and Bremigan each finished the day undefeated at 3-0, while Knapp finished 2-1 on the day. The Thunder boasted the only three undefeated golfers in the entire tournament. All four Trine golfers were victorious in the championship round against Hope. Knapp, Bremigan and Tevlin each won three-up on their opponent with two holes to play.

The Thunder victory over the Dutch could provide momentum for Trine as they prepare to battle Hope, Calvin and Kalamazoo in the upcoming MIAA National Qualifier. The winner of the three round, 54-hole tournament receives an automatic-qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships.

The first National Qualifier round will be contested this Saturday, Apr. 23 on the links of Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids, Mich.

A second group of Thunder golfers also competed in the Bill Gettig Invitational. Jordan Davidhizar (Millersburg, Ind. / Fairfield) went 2-1 to highlight the efforts of that team.
