Trine Captures Third MIAA Event of the Year

ADRIAN, MICH.  --  The Trine University men's golf team captured its third of four Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association jamboree events with a single-round tournament hosted by Adrian (Mich.) College at the Lenawee Country Club in Adrian, Mich.

Three of the five players making up the individual team eligible scores were at par or better with junior Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) leading the way with a score of three-under 69 strokes to earn medalist honors.  It marks the third straight MIAA events that a Trine player has shot the lowest overall score.

Seniors Grant Brettnacher (Lafayette, Ind./Harrison) and Carlos Coeto (Bernardo, Mexico) both finished tied for second on the team with rounds of 72 strokes to finish even and tied for second among the field.  Freshman Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich./Clarkston Everest) finished a stroke back of Brettnacher and Coeto with a round of 73 strokes and was tied for fifth overall.

Senior Nick Knowlton (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman), who was the tournament medalist in the first two MIAA events, carded a round of 77 strokes which put him in a tie for 21st.

In addition, senior Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) played as an individual and shot a solid score of 75 strokes and tied for 12th overall.

As a team, the Thunder ended the day with a total of 286 strokes and finished 11 strokes ahead of its nearest opponent in Hope (Mich.) College who posted an overall score of 297 strokes.  Host school Adrian rounded out the top-three schools at 301 strokes.

Trine will play the final MIAA Jamboree single-round tournament of the fall on Monday, Sept. 30.  Kalamazoo (Mich.) College will serve as host which will be played at the Kalamazoo Country Club beginning at 1 p.m.
