Thunder Win First Tournament of the Spring

OLIVET, MICH.  --  All five players recorded rounds in the 70s as the Trine University men's golf team started of its 2021 spring season with a win at the Olviet Spring Invitational at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, Mich.

The tournament field featured all eight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association schools with Trine posting a winning team score of 303 strokes.  Calvin (Mich.) University was second with 309 strokes and Hope (Mich.) College rounded out the top three with 313 strokes.

Four out of the five individual scores eligible for the team standings placed in the top five, led by senior Todd Mieske (Owosso, Mich./Owosso) who fired an 18-hole total of 75 strokes and tied for second overall.  The trio of seniors Carlos Coeto (Bernardo, Mexico), Cameron Ruge (Coldwater, Mich./Coldwater) and sophomore Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich./Clarkston Everest) all tied for fifth place with rounds of 76 strokes.

Freshman Mark Civanich (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) was fifth with a single-round total of 78 strokes.

Trine had one player compete as an individual in freshman Jack Brockie (Jackson, Mich./Hanover Horton) and joined Coeto, Ruge and Lowney in a tie for fifth place with a score of 76 strokes.

The Thunder will next compete in the Adrian Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 3 in a single-round tournament at The Hills of Lenawee Golf Course in Adrian, Mich.  The round is set to begin at 1 p.m.
