Colin Crumrine and Nick Phillips Lead Trine to Victory in Ken Venturi Invitational

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Trine University men's golf team were victorious in the Ken Venturi Invitational at Zollner Golf Course on Tuesday afternoon, with freshman Colin Crumrine [Newark, Ohio / Newark Catholic] and junior Nick Phillips [Yorktown, Ind. / Mincie Central] coming in first place on the player leaderboard.

This event was different than others on the schedule, as the players were in pairs and shooting different types of partner events. Holes 1-6 were contested as a scramble, 7-12 was best ball, and finally 13-18 alternating shots. The format was adopted by long-time Trine men's golf coach Bill SanGiacomo.

Crumrine and Phillips combined to shoot a 6-under 65 in their round, and went 6-under on their first six holes after beginning on hole 4.

"We got off to a hot start and just continued to stay consistent from there," Crumrine mentioned at the conclusion of the round. "It was fantastic having to play something different from stroke play, it's cool to be able to change it up."

"Colin and I played off each other really well and it was fun to play a different style than usual," Phillips said.

The rest of Crumrine and Phillips' team consisted of Carter Rang [Fort Wayne, Ind. / Concordia Lutheran] and Nathaniel Acres [Fishers, Ind. / Fishers], as well as Mitch Blank [Hillsdale, Mich. / Hillsdale] and Charlie Eriksen [Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Cranbrook Kingswood]. Both those groups shot 69's en route to a team score of 203.

The teams of Mitch Lowney [Fenton, Mich. / Clarkston Everest] and Mark Civanich [Valparaiso, Ind. / Valparaiso] and Jack Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] and Brogan Brockie [Jackson, Mich. / Hanover Horton] tied for second, just one stroke back from Crumrine and Phillips with 66's.

Next on the schedule is 36 holes at the Hills of Lenawee Golf Course in Adrian, Michigan for the Irish Hills Invitational. That event tees off on Friday, September 17 at noon.
