Lowney Named MIAA Athlete of the Week

FREELAND, Mich. -- Trine University junior Mitch Lowney (Fenton, Mich. / Clarkston Everest) has been named this week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Men's Golf Athlete of the Week.

It is the first time this season that a Thunder student-athlete has taken home the award and the first time that Lowney has earned the honor.

In the team's lone traditional contest of the week at the Irish Hills Invitational, Lowney led the way to a second place finish. He turned in the team's low score on both days. On Friday, he finished with a 72, taking fourth individually as the team posted a score of 298 to finish in second.

Then on the second day of the event he shaved a stroke off that score to finish with a 71 and a 143 overall. Individually that was good enough to finish in a tie for second, just a pair of strokes out of medalist position. The team would finish off with 593 strokes to finish in second place, six strokes behind Kenyon College.

So far this season, Lowney is averaging 74.4 strokes per round aftering posting five scores to date. The team returns to MIAA play in their next competition when they travel to the Medalist Golf Course in Marshall, Mich. for the second MIAA Jamboree of the season.
