Career-Low 66 for Mark Civanich Earns Medalist Honors; Team Ties for Second

ANGOLA, Ind. – In their second event of the fall of 2023, the Trine University men's golf team hosted their annual Ken Venturi Invitational tournament at Zollner Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon. The Thunder tied for second-place as a team and senior Mark Civanich fired a career-low 66 (5-under) to claim the individual medalist honor.

Calvin University won with a team score of 279 (5-under) while Trine and NCAA Division II Wayne State University tied with a combined score of 282. Each of those three teams finished under-par for the round. Civanich had six birdies over the course of the final 12 holes en route to the career day where he topped the field by two strokes. He had a stretch of three birdies in four holes from 7-10 and capped his scorecard with a pair of birdies on holes 17 and 18.

"I am proud of the progress our team has made after this past weekend, however we fell just short of the impressive play by Calvin," Civanich mentioned. "The guys and I will continue to work hard. We have the talent, we just need some polishing."

Three members of the Thunder squad finished in a tie for 12th place on the playerboard. Sophomores Carter Schnipke and Asher Caldwell as well as junior Wade Shafer recorded rounds of 72 (1-over). Shafer led the way between the three with four birdies, Caldwell had two and Schnipke one. Junior Carter Rang was the fifth member of the Thunder first team with a 77.

Other top scorers in the 25-player field for Trine included junior Nick Coccaro with a 70 (1-under), junior Colin Crumrine and senior Charlie Eriksen with 74, and junior Ryan Gienger with a 75.

The Thunder will take this weekend off and compete once again the following weekend in the Irish Hills Invitational at Tecumseh Golf Club on September 15-16.
