Penalties Hinder Thunder, Fall 6-2 to Foresters

ANGOLA, IND. -- The Trine men's NCAA hockey team was defeated by Lake Forest College by the score of 6-2.

Special teams were crucial in the game as the two teams combined for 74 minutes on 26 infractions. While the Thunder struggled on the power-play, finishing 0-9, the Foresters were able to capitalize, finishing with four power-play goals on 14 attempts.

Lake Forest took the early lead with the first of their power-play goals, in the 13th minute of the game.

Trine scored the equalizer just six minutes later. Sophomore defender Dante Suffredini (Shelby Township) started the play when he passed the puck up the ice to freshman forward Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N. Y.) who carried it over the blue line. Freshman forward Cole Lussier (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) took it the rest of the way and finished off with his second goal of the season.

It looked like the period would end at 1-1, but the Thunder were not done scoring in the period. Sophomore defender Henry Hearon (Chicago, Ill.) kept the puck in the zone and passed it down behind the Foresters net. Sophomore Tanner Bennett (Columbus, Ind.) recovered the puck but was tied up by a Lake Forest defender, his only option was to poke it out behind the net. Junior forward Chris Timm (Dublin, Calif.) scooped up the loose puck and put it past the goalie for his third goal of the season. The Thunder would enter the first intermission with the 2-1 lead.

In the second, the penalties began to build up against Trine and the Foresters would take advantage with two power-play goals, the second of which would ultimately be the game-winner. The score was 3-2 entering the second intermission.

The Foresters would add three more goals in the third to finish the game with a 6-2 victory. Following the defeat, Trine falls to 4-11-2 overall and 0-8-2 in the NCHA. They return to the ice on Friday, January 19 when they travel to take on Concordia University (Wisc.) in a 7 p.m. CST conference contest.
