Men’s Hockey Stuns #2 Pointers with Tie

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey team came away with the upset tie against national number two University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point by the score of 2-2.

The Pointers struck first in the contest coming away with a goal in the ninth minute of the first period to take the 1-0 lead.

But the Thunder responded just a minute and a half later as sophomore forward Corey Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) came away with the equalizer to tie the game at one. The goal was his first of the season and featured assists from both freshman forward Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) and sophomore forward Carmine Taffo (Staten Island, N.Y.).

Trine wasn't finished scoring in the period, coming up with the go-ahead power-play goal in the final minute of the first. The goal was scored by sophomore defender Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.), his first of the season.

The Thunder would take the 2-1 lead into the 18th minute of the second period when Stevens Point would tally an equalizer of their own to knot up the game again at 2-2.

Both teams would fend off power-play attempts by the opposition and were unable to score in either the third period or overtime.

Trine overcame a 12-46 shot deficit to come away with the tie.  Junior goalie Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) was the key piece to the effort. He finished the contest with 44 saves, securing the game for the Thunder.

Trine improves to 1-0-1 following the victory. They will return home to open Northern Collegiate Athletic Association (NCHA) play by taking on Marian University on Friday, Nov. 2. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
