ASHLAND, Wis. - The Trine University men's hockey team fell behind in the first period and, despite cutting the deficit to as little as one, lost the contest 5-2 to host and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) foe, Northland College.

The Jacks got off to a blazing start in the contest taking the lead under one minute into the contest. They would add two more in the first to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission. Forward Zackary Fisher led the way for Northland scoring their first goal and assisting on the rest in the period. He would add another assist later in the night to finish with the four-point game.

The Thunder cut the deficit to two just 28 seconds into the second period. Freshman forward Brent Jones (Brighton, Mich.) scored the goal, the first of his career. Fellow freshman Nick Magill-Diaz (Clawson, Mich.) added the assist on the play. The goal was the lone one of the period and Trine trailed 3-1 heading into the final period of play.

Trine cut the deficit to just one goal in the 11th minute of the final stanza. Freshman forward Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to make the score 3-2. Both Jon Doyle (Livonia, Mich.) and Magill-Diaz added assists.

The comeback ended there, however, as Northland put the game out of reach in the 18th and 19th minutes of the contest with two goals giving them their final 5-2 lead.

The Thunder fall to 2-6-1 overall and 2-5 in the NCHA following the loss. They will continue their road trip tomorrow when they faceoff with the College of St. Scholastica at 5 p.m. CST.
