Two-Goal Third Not Enough for Men's Hockey

DULUTH, Minn. – Two power-play goals gave the edge to the College of St. Scholastica as they defeated the Trine University men's hockey team by the score of 3-2.

The Saints came up with both of the power-play tallies in the first period of play to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Nate Pionk came away with both goals for the team to lead the way on the night.

Trine mounted their comeback attempt in the third period. Still trailing 2-0 heading into the seventh minute of the period, the Thunder were given a man-advantage following a cross-checking penalty called against Pionk. Halfway through the two-minute penalty freshman forward Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) cashed in to pull the team within one. Both junior defender Henry Hearon (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore forward Alex Johanson (Skokie, Ill.) added assists on the goal.

The Thunder found an equalizer in at the 14-minute mark in the period. Sophomore blueliner Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) tallied the goal while freshman William Casey (Eagle River, Alaska) and sophomore Max DiCicco (Howell, Mich.) added assists.

St. Scholastica responded just under two minutes later with another go-ahead goal to take their final lead of 3-2.

Trine falls to 2-7-1 overall following the loss and 2-6 in Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play. They will return to play on Saturday, Dec. 15 when they travel to face Chatham in a non-conference contest. The game is set to start at 7:10 p.m.
