Men's Hockey Falls to Nationally-Ranked St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. – The Trine University men's hockey team held close with nationally-ranked St. Norbert College but came up short of the upset as they lost the contest 3-2.

The game was defined by penalties as four of the five goals in the contest came with a team on the power-play.

The Green Knights opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the contest, but the Thunder responded just three minutes later by tying the game. The goal came from sophomore Alex Johanson (Skokie, Ill.) with assists from freshman Garrett Hallford (McKinney, Texas) and William Casey (Eagle River, Alaska).

St. Norbert finished the scoring in the period taking back the lead in the 12th minute with another goal as the teams entered the first intermission with Trine trailing 2-1.

Both teams went scoreless in the second period before the Green Knights added to their lead in the fourth minute of the final period with another power-play goal.

Trine responded by pulling back within one with the lone even-strength goal of the contest as sophomore Michael Meisenbacher (Basking Ridge, N.J.) recorded his sixth of the season. Freshman Brandon Krumpschmid (Grand Rapids, Mich.) assisted on the goal which put the score at its final of 3-2.

Junior Brett Young (Livonia, Mich.) played the full game in net for the Thunder, aside from the final minute of the game when they pulled him in favor of the extra attacker. He finished the game with 26 saves.

Trine falls to 8-11-2 overall and 4-9-1 in the conference following the loss. They will return home for their final homestand of the season beginning with a 7 p.m. contest against Aurora University on Friday, Feb. 1.
